What People Say About Us.

I have sent patients with chronic pain to at least five different acupuncture providers, including Vanderbilt Integrative Medicine and a couple of neurology clinics as well as traditional acupuncturists… nobody is getting the results you get in your office. It’s not even close! I have told my staff that all acupuncture patients are to be sent to Dr. Kestner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Dr. Kestner was the first licensed doctor to bring clinical acupuncture to our Murfreesboro community.  His acupuncture style is based upon studying Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and contemporary clinical (scientific) acupuncture.  You will be amazed by how comfortable and pleasant the acupuncture treatment is.

The tiny needles are barely visible, thinner than human hair.  They are nothing like any needle you have ever seen before.

In fact, there really should be another word for needle.  The needles used in our acupuncture are delicate, fine, sterile, disposable, single-use stainless steel pins.  Instead of cutting tissue like traditional medical needles, acupuncture needles are polished to a very smooth microscopic point so that they actually slide between the tissue when inserted so that there is no pain.

“The Painless One”

Dr. Kestner uses the finest needles available produced by Seirin.  They are manufactured in Japan to strict exacting standards.  He utilizes specific techniques developed over more than fifteen years to provide treatment that is virtually pain free.  Even patients that are “afraid of needles” find that they actually enjoy the treatment and look forward to their next visit.  You will too!

Don’t worry.  We will take very good care of you!

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture has been very helpful for millions of people for thousands of years!  Here in Murfreesboro many area residents have discovered that acupuncture can provide relief that has been difficult to find.

The tiny painless needles are gently inserted into specific points carefully selected to obtain the best results.

Acupuncture points are associated with specific locations in the human nervous system.  The stimulation has a direct effect on the functioning of the brain.

Traditional view

Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years.  In fact, acupuncture was used to help people find relief of pain and heal from illness before modern scientific principles of human physiology were understood.  Acupuncture was developed in an era known as a pre-scientific period.

The ancient theories developed primarily in China and other Asian cultures.  The most dominant aspect of these traditional views of health is that energetic balance is necessary for good health.  For a person to be healthy, their body must function in a balanced, harmonious way.  Even though this idea originates from ancient cultures from around the world, modern views of health are in agreement with the concept.

The primary purpose of acupuncture when practiced from a traditional perspective is to assist the body to heal and restore balance.  Acupuncture helps your own body to heal.  The traditional view considers your body’s own innate energy to be the essential healing force and the acupuncture treatment helps reduce blockages or stagnation of the energy pathways.

Even though this ancient traditional perspective may seem unusual to those of us in a modern culture, it must be remembered that acupuncture has long been found to be effective, even though it may be difficult to understand.

Contemporary Scientific Explanation (Clinical Acupuncture)

In recent years a large amount of research has been directed toward acupuncture in scientific facilities all around the world.  It has become evident that acupuncture is an effective treatment that holds great promise for a wide range of conditions.  Studies from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, China, Japan, Korea, India and other countries have demonstrated the very real positive effects of acupuncture stimulation.

Most of the research has investigated the effects of acupuncture stimulation on the nervous system.  The tiny needles have been shown to stimulate peripheral nerves in such a way as to affect the function of the deepest portions of the brain.

In fact, acupuncture stimulates the portion of the brain that interprets pain and affects normal regulatory function.  This is believed to be the reason that acupuncture can be so effective for painful conditions and in helping the body function in a more balanced manner.

It is interesting that clinical acupuncture can have a profound benefit for hormonal imbalances as well.

One thing is for sure.  Acupuncture has proven to be highly effective and safe for millions of people around the world for a wide range of conditions.  It is drug-free, so drug side effects are non-existent.  In many cases, patients have responded well to acupuncture when other treatments have failed to resolve their complaint.

Research is ongoing to understand how acupuncture works.  Dr. Mark Kestner is actively following clinical acupuncture research done by organizations in the United States and other countries to learn more about how to develop acupuncture to be even more effective. What Are The Advantages of Clinical Acupuncture?

What is Medical Acupuncture?

You may be surprised to learn that there are several forms of acupuncture.

Many people are familiar with what is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture.  This is acupuncture that is practiced in a way that emulates acupuncture as it is believed to have been practiced thousands of years ago.

Although it is valuable to honor the traditions of the past, it is also important to take advantage of the knowledge that has been gained about human physiology during the past two thousand years.

Medical acupuncture is provided by licensed doctors and other professional level healthcare providers that have a background in traditional acupuncture as well as in contemporary scientific clinical procedures.  In a way, it is a blend of the most valuable parts of the traditional approach combined with a modern understanding of human function.

Just as it would be unreasonable for a heart surgeon to treat their patient based only on thousand-year-old knowledge, it is advantageous for acupuncture clinicians to have a legitimate background in contemporary human physiology.  This can only be accomplished through years of modern education in clinical sciences.

What Is Dr. Kestner's Background in Acupuncture?

In 1998 Dr. Mark Kestner completed his first post-graduate course in acupuncture and was named a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture.  He subsequently sat for and successfully passed national board examination in acupuncture by NBCE.  He has studied with respected experts in acupuncture from around the United States and from China.

How Is The US Military Using Acupuncture?

Perhaps one of the most interesting new uses of acupuncture in the world is in the United States military.  This photo shows Air Force medical personnel using clinical acupuncture to treat soldiers stationed in active war zone hospital.

Acupuncture is finding converts in many unexpected locations.  Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt Integrated Medical Center, and the Cleveland Clinic are just a few of the iconic facilities representing the pinnacle of medical prestige that are now offering clinical acupuncture.

Alternative medicines, Dr. Oz says, deal with the body’s energy—something that traditional Western medicine generally does not. “We’re beginning now to understand things that we know in our hearts are true but we could never measure,” he says. “As we get better at understanding how little we know about the body, we begin to realize that the next big frontier … in medicine is energy medicine. It’s not the mechanistic part of the joints moving. It’s not the chemistry of our body. It’s understanding for the first time how energy influences how we feel.”

Here is a section published on the world famous Cleveland Clinic medical website:

“Acupuncture helps treat numerous diseases and conditions
The World Health Organization endorses acupuncture, and clinical studies have shown it to be a beneficial treatment for many conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain: migraines, neck and back pain, tendonitis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Digestive disorders: irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, gastritis and constipation
  • Urinary and reproductive disorders: menstrual cramps, irregular or heavy periods, infertility and menopausal symptoms
  • Psychological and emotional disorders: depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia
  • Symptom management for adverse reactions to chemotherapy and radiation, including fatigue, generalized pain, dry mouth, peripheral neuropathy, nausea and vomiting
  • Seasonal allergies
  • High blood pressure
  • Addictions to nicotine, alcohol and drugs”
  • Overweight or obesity, when coupled with diet and exercise

What Are Contemporary Views of Acupuncture?

Dr. Oz introduced Oprah to acupuncture live on her television show.

Dr. Oz introduced audiences to   acupuncturist Daniel Hsu on The Oprah Winfrey Show . Now he’s  invited Daniel to educate Oprah Radio listeners about the healing powers  of acupuncture. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine practice  that involves sticking needles into different parts of the skin. This releases  endorphins and serotonin in your brain, which are natural chemicals that  regulate pleasure and mood. Daniel says acupuncture has been shown to treat many  common ailments and chronic diseases more effectively than modern Western  medicine practices. Daniel outlines a few of the health benefits of  acupuncture: Provides relief for chronic pains such as lower back  pain and migraines Daniel says acupuncture not only causes the body to  release natural pain killers, it can also change a patient’s perception of the  pain, thereby relieving their symptoms. “If two people have the same X-rays and  the same MRIs and one person can feel absolutely no pain and the other person  can feel a lot of pain and it’s just unexplainable, what acupuncture does is  just alter that perception—and it’s quite effective,” he says.   Relieves stress and anxiety Daniel says acupuncture treatments geared  toward different parts of the body can relieve different types of stress. For  example, he says that if a patient complains of palpitations and is upset and  unhappy, he will use acupuncture to trigger points that help the heart. If a  patient is irritable, stressed-out and quick to lose their temper, he will treat  trigger points that help the liver. “Every organ has corresponding signs and  symptoms,” he says.

About MATRIX

A few years ago as Dr. Kestner traveled to attend conferences, he was introduced to a new device that had been developed specifically for neurological conditions, spinal and joint issues and chronic pain. He developed a professional friendship with the creator of the device. Dr. Kestner has a background in physics of electronic medical devices for pain treatment and found the device intriguing. However, he did not immediately move to bring the device here until he was convinced of its safety and effectiveness.

As he delved into the research, he decided that the advanced Electro-Analgesia device would be a great fit for our clinic. In fact, the actual results we have seen have far exceeded our most optimistic expectations.

We have seen patients that have suffered with chronic painful conditions for years respond well to this treatment. Patients with long term join pain from torn rotator cuffs, tendinitis, old injuries, and even arthritis have become pain-free! Patients that have had persistent pain even after spine, joint and other surgeries have finally found RELIEF. Peripheral neuropathy and other neurological causes of pain can often be treated.
